Local Flying Guide

Always verify conditions with local authorities and property owners before flight.

Potential Safe Flying Locations

  • Areas at the extreme southeastern edge of Irvine approaching the foothills where Class C floor rises above 400 ft AGL — always verify via FAA B4UFLY and LAANC before flying
  • Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park adjacent areas (outside Class C lower floors — verify first)
  • Portions of Irvine where Class C floor is at 2,500 ft MSL or higher AND you remain at or below 400 ft AGL with LAANC authorization

Areas to Avoid

  • John Wayne Airport (KSNA) Class C airspace — covers virtually all of Irvine; LAANC required
  • All Irvine city parks, sports complexes, and open space preserves
  • Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks and habitat corridors
  • UCI campus without university authorization
  • Orange County Great Park without city and event approval
  • All Irvine Company HOA communities (private property restrictions)
  • Irvine Spectrum Center and similar high-density commercial zones

Weather Considerations

Irvine has a mild Mediterranean coastal climate influenced by proximity to the Pacific (5–7 miles). June Gloom marine layer is common May–July, with morning clouds burning off by midday. Santa Ana winds from the northeast occur October–February with gusts exceeding 50 mph — extreme hazard for drone operations. Summers are warm (75–90°F) but coastal breezes moderate afternoon heat. Low humidity makes for clear VLOS conditions on most days outside marine layer and Santa Ana events.

Seasonal Tips

BEST: September–October and March–May for calm winds, clear skies, and moderate temperatures. AVOID: Santa Ana wind events (Oct–Feb) with extreme gusts; June–July marine layer mornings; all locations within John Wayne Class C without advance LAANC authorization — in Irvine this means virtually everywhere.

Compliance Checklist

  • ✓ Federal FAA Part 107 or recreational exemption
  • ✓ California state regulations
  • ✓ Irvine local ordinances
  • ✓ B4UFLY airspace check
  • ✓ LAANC authorization if in controlled airspace
  • ✓ Property owner permission
  • ✓ Weather safety
